This is a common question that many this day have to ask over and over and never get anything in return. It is asked for affirmation due to the lack of the cruel responses, due to betrayal, brokenness, denial, etc. This question is so common that even Jesus asked one of his disciples, after His Resurrection. See God already knew this world was going to need to know His Love.
"Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?" Jesus asked Peter three times. Peter, after repeating himself for the third time he said, "YES Lord you know I Love You." Peter really understood then what Jesus was asking of Him. Peter understood what Jesus did at the cross for him and all humankind, he knew there was no greater love than that alone. Peter knew it was done so that all can be glorified with him at the end of it all. So what was Jesus really asking him/us?
1. Will you Love Me more than anything, more than others, will you sacrifice everything for me?
2. Will you Love Me enough to preach the Gospel, not be ashamed, no matter what will you share and freely spread My love?
3. Will you Love Me enough, be there for those who are in deep need of help, even those against you?
See the Love Jesus was asking cannot come from us, but only through Him. To love from our own effort is much difficult, it isn't real, it will fail us and others. BUT to love with the Love of Christ, not only we become complete with fullness as to who we are, we grasp our identity in Christ as sons and daughters, ruler-ships with power and authority. We become captivated in "True Love."
"Son of Jonah" - The name Jonah means "Dove", in which we find is relating to the Holy Spirit, the one that Jesus promises us to bring comfort, guidance, and authority. Jonah's book was one that gave Gods direction evolving his kingdom, to understand the working of mercy and compassion among humankind.
God gives us guidance in 1 Corinthians 13 to actually be successful in Loving the way He demands us to. To Love Jesus it takes the following:
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. His Love will never fail....
"Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me.?" Jesus is asking us today. Today is when we can make a decision, to leave selfish and self seeking desires behind; and Truly experience phenomenal, never ending over flowing Love. Even in the darkest moments of our lives when we see nothing but hate, that love can be flourished even more in us. When there is nothing but darkness surrounding you, Jesus is asking you "LOVE ME", so I can take you out of this brokenness, and take you into LIFE and abundance. Once we accept His Love with our hearts and not just our words, we then can face a world of brokenness, bring hope and express Love the way it was intended. His Love will give us strength to face everything that comes our way. His Love will NEVER fail you!
